One of my favorite things about WordPress is its community.  The community is welcoming, self-regulating, and massive.  But it isn’t the only community that I am a part of.  I have community at work, at church and across the nation.  All of these communities are ones that I invest different levels of time and energy into and bring differing levels of return into my life.  So why have community at all?

The Why Of Community

To me, living in community has been one of the best decisions in my life.  I’m not just talking about having friends either.  I’m talking about intentionally creating spheres of people who have influence in your life.  My closest community is my small group at church.  We meet weekly (at the very least) and talk about life.  We call each other out on things that hurting us, our families, and our wives.  We make sure we are all growing.  We ask the tough questions.  More than that, we encourage each other.  This accountability and encouragement has caused huge amounts of personal growth in my life the past 18 months.  I wouldn’t change it for anything.

But I also have other communities.  We meet and talk less frequently.  I let them have influence in my life, but to lesser degrees and in specific areas rather than carte blanche.  But they are just as important.  I need people who understand not only my personal struggles, but my business struggles, my industry, my hobbies and other areas.  Combined, these groups form a net that protects me from the struggles of living life alone or facing issues without help.  They also spur me on to be better in every area of my life.

As humans, we are created to live life in community.  Having relationships, friends, and loved ones is a natural part of who we are.  Even introverts benefit greatly from having people in their lives who can love them and help them grow.

What does community looks like in your life? Do you have community?  Maybe your community looks quite different than mine.  That’s okay, in fact, it is great!  I’d love to hear your thoughts on community and why it has been important in your life!
